Harmony Kent Blog tour blast-Guest post

Post 01

Hi there! Thanks for joining me on my awesome fourteen-day blog tour with 4Wills Publishing and my fantastic host for today! You can find details of my other stops here: 4Wills Author Page.

I published my first book, THE BATTLE FOR BRISINGAMEN, in May 2013. I soon followed this up with the award winning mystery/thriller THE GLADE in November 2013, and my first Young Adult fiction book, ELEMENTAL EARTH, in July 2014.

Today, am promoting my latest work, POLISH YOUR PROSE. This is my first non-fiction book, and is a powerful new guide that gives essential editing tips for authors.

Lots of books have been written on the art of writing, and here—at last—is a guide that will teach you the essential techniques of editing your own book. This will help you turn a promising manuscript into a published novel. And, it does this without the jargon. You don’t need to know all the grammatical terms in order to make use of this book. You don’t need to know the definition of a split infinitive, a comma splice, or a ‘to be’ verb, as this manual explains these in detail in easy to understand terms, and a lively and engaging style.
Chapters on Passive Writing, Tense, Point of View, Dialogue, and other techniques take you through the same processes an editor would go through to polish and perfect your manuscript. Good writing is nothing without good editing. Learn the secrets of good editing and writing with this essential author reference, which offers so much more for so much less.

As well as being an award-winning author, I am an accomplished editor and proofreader. My passion is helping Indie Authors to successfully achieve their goals and dreams.

Excerpt from the foreword, written by Rave Reviews Book Club’s very own Nonnie Jules!

Writing is hard work, and although we find it easy to speak our thoughts, when it comes to putting it all on paper, there are rules that must be followed, and unfortunately, some of us just don’t know those rules. Punctuation, capitalization … who can keep up with all of that?
Because of her talent, keen eye for writing and her love of helping others, Harmony has put together some of the most wonderful, carefully explained tips to make your written work the best it can be.  POLISH YOUR PROSE is in plain, simple, easy-to-understand English (I mean that literally as Harmony Kent is from the UK).  No fancy words which you won’t understand, no jargon that will require you to run out and get a “DUMMIES GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING ‘HARMONY’S’ POLISH YOUR PROSE.” Nope, just plain and simple, from beginning to end.
POLISH YOUR PROSE has a chapter on just about every writing issue imaginable!  Confused about 1st, 2nd and 3rd person? It’s in there!  Past & Present tense got you stumped? It’s in there! Singles and Plurals throwing you for a loop? There’s a chapter on those, too!  Harmony covers it all.”

You can pick up your copy of POLISH YOUR PROSE here:

Rode to Justice by K.J. Rollinson-my review

I gave this four stars in my review. KJ tells a story from a 51 year-old detective's point of view. I found it very interesting and engaging even though the story was several bundled into one with common thread of the Homicide Detective daily life in New York city. You can imagine how busy he was there. His young female partner, he tries to protect and nurture her abilities at the same time. With a little work this could easily become a five star book but needs a little work especially on spacing. There are sudden gaps in the words or a word split apart in the ebook version on Kindle. Like I said, I enjoyed the book, still.
Here is the opening page excerpt for your reading enjoyment-
I read the Autopsy Report, the deceased a Mr. Joshua Simpson; heart attack during copulation. I called to Gina Morris, my 20 year old rookie partner, who, in her eagerness to read it, knocked my brass name plaque which skidded to the edge of the desk.
‘Whoops, gotcha! Can’t have John Rode, first grade detective, ending up on the floor.’ I smiled ironically.
She didn’t realise how much her vibrant personality had stopped my slide into despair since my wife died. I moved from a South Bronx Precinct two years ago to a Precinct in Manhattan. Gina has been with me for six months. I rib her sometimes about the 'old guy' she's hitched up to.

Time of the year for Black Friday...Purple Thursday?

It is that time once again. Black Friday is starting earlier and earlier as stores try to compete for your dollars. Now, you haven't even digested your thanksgiving dinner before you have to rush out to one of the stores because Black Friday sales now begins on Purple Thursday?  Some places have even started black Friday even on Monday. When will this craziness end? I know the stores are all looking for the dollars the consumer has in their pockets but I am sick of all the sales starting earlier. Why can't they just keep it like they have been? I am one of those that never go shopping on Black Friday, not even for groceries because it is crazy out there. How is it in your neck of the woods?

On another subject, I have reduced the price of my Chronicles of the Marauder to $1.49 (ebook) through the holidays on Amazon and Smashwords so you don't have to go anywhere to enjoy a good book and avoid the madness. You can get your copy on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BM5L606 or on Smashwords at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/323360 for those desiring the paperback, Amazon also has it for only $13.49 through the holidays. Order it now for those desiring to hold an actual book in their hands.

Okay, talk back. I'm listening!

Excerpt from my interview on the geekiary

Check out Sci-Fi Author A. G. Moye!

1908470_318676611649480_2647464522975456563_nWhat can you tell about your Chronicles of the Marauder Series?
I particularly found Neil quite interesting.
Science fiction fans that crave adventure and loveable aliens. Unlike most sci-fi captains, Neil was a convicted felon.
Upon Neil’s birth, he was put up for adoption. A family adopted him until the woman found she was with child, and returned him to the orphanage. She named him Neil Armstrong Andrews, the only good that came from it. Neil had a chip on his shoulder, winding up going from foster home to foster home, before growing up in the orphanage. Neil was smart, young and intelligent. After leaving the orphanage, he attended college on scholarships. He met and fell in love with a young rich woman, they elope. Although her family disfavor her choice, they accept it and welcome him into their world. His wife becomes pregnant and Neil is so happy he tells everyone. At one significant party, he brags about his wife being with child to her rich friends while playing billiards.
One young socialite comments, “Neil, are you sure you are the father? She has been bedded a time or two, even after she married”. Neil explodes, striking the man. One of his cohorts comes to his aid, Neil grabs the nearest pool stick and beats them within an inch of their life. The police arrive and Neil is arrested. His wife and her family disown him, leaving him to face the charges. He pleads guilty at the advice of his lawyer and goes to prison.
While he’s there, the family has the marriage annulled and she quickly remarries a rich man. Neil was distraught not knowing whether she had a boy or girl. Prison life had an effect on Neil, he was determined to change. Released on probation, Neil attends anger management classes.
Years pass and Neil’s luck finally changes. He won the lottery! Not just any lottery, but the largest lottery in history. With his newfound wealth, Neil pursued his lifelong dream of going into space. Using the Internet, he contacts scientists with unusual abilities. Neil enlists these misfit scientists and engineers to design and build the Marauder. The design was for interplanetary travel in the galaxy and the cost of the ship exceeded his winnings. Neil approaches others, but the Chinese and Australians were his biggest investors. Neil’s probation prevented him from traveling. So as a way of building his dream, “A Board of Directors” was created to build the Marauder. The rest is history, Marauder history, that is!
You can check out A. G. Moye’s Amazon author page for more of his works.

I thought some of my readers would enjoy reading Neil's background. A hard luck child with a chip on his shoulders that didn't come off easy. Maybe you can understand where he is coming from when he does or thinks some of the things in his mind. It was never easy for him to love but the carefree, always happy Carrie reaches him what real love is. For those that haven't read the story, I have placed "Chronicles of the Marauder- Marauder Rising" on sale at your local ebook store for only $1.49 this includes both Smashwords and Amazon. Happy reading and Talk back, I'm listening.

Hunters by Aofie Sheridan- guest post

Today's guest on her blog tour is Aofie Sheridan, author

Hunters – Taken From Chapter Four – Memories (Abigail)

***
That night, I dreamt of before.
My mother had been always sad. That’s how I remembered her. I didn’t have one memory or a photo of my mum happy. My memories start from the age of four, people say it’s not possible, but I have them and my mum has been always sick. I remember sitting on the stairs and the doctors talking to my father. I wasn’t sure at the time what they were discussing, but later I learned it was because my mother wasn’t getting better.
Dad had to work, there was no two ways about it so mom took care of us. The first day, my dad was worried when he left me and my brother, who was only three at the time, in my mother’s hands. That first day, I was five. I stayed in my room and kept my brother with me, playing a tea party with Mr. Bear and Diana, my rag doll. Hunger was one reason for leaving the room. I would pass the sitting room door where my mother sat, staring out the window. Her brown eyes darted to me, freezing me to the spot. I was afraid to move, but I didn’t know why.  I just felt afraid of her. I would make a peanut butter sandwich for myself and some Ready brek for Sam; I had seen dad make it before so I was careful. It took me a while as I pulled the chair around the kitchen, reaching the presses and the microwave. I turned to go back upstairs, but my mother blocked the door. I stood still, hoping she wouldn’t see me.
She was always so quiet, but on this day, she spoke, “If your dad thinks that I don’t mind you and Sam, he will send you away and you’ll never see us again.”
She knelt down, taking the food from my hands and placing it on the floor. Her face softened and she hugged me. I didn’t hug her back. She cried, saying she was sorry for everything. She pulled back and handed me my food and returned to her seat in the sitting room. I raced up to Sam. His food was cold, but he ate it. He was quiet for a child, well, I realized later on that three year olds are not always as good. We would play up there for the rest of the day until Dad got home from work. I would race into his arms and hug him tightly, knowing everything would be okay.
“Did you have fun with your mum, today?” Dad asked.
I thought of what mommy had said to me; I didn’t want to go away from Daddy or Sam. So I nodded, smiled and went back to playing with Mr. Bear. This became our routine for the next month.
Memories flashed through my mind, snippets of talking to Sam, playing games, saying goodbye as Dad left for work and greeting him when he got home. My mother’s empty eyes, and then the memories stopped, slowing down to another one.
“Sam, I’m going to the toilet, you stay here with Mr. Bear.”
Sam nodded and continued to pour tea for us all. I closed the bedroom door behind me so he would stay in. He was too small to reach the handle. I raced down to the bathroom. The door was open. My mother was lying on the white tile floor. The tiles were red. She looked so white and the knife Daddy always told us not to touch lay in her hand. I noticed that her arm was cut real badly. I didn’t run to her or cry as I was too afraid of what stood in the corner of the bathroom.
A dark figure, like a big man, with a cloak over him stared down at my mum. He scared me. My breath came out in small puffs of cold air. I could see the water that dripped from the tap was frozen solid, held in midair. I looked back at the man, frost was starting to grow on his cloak. He wasn’t the bad man that was always around Mommy. He was different, but still he felt wrong.
I ran back to Sam and closed the door, pulling him into the corner of the room. It was getting so cold that our breaths were visible in front of us. Sam started to cry, but I pulled him beside me while crossing my legs so I wouldn’t pee, but it was so cold and it took Daddy a long time to get home and I didn’t want to go into the bathroom where mommy and the man were.
I could hear my daddy’s scream before he burst into the room, gathering me and Sam in his arms. He was crying. I had never seen daddy cry before.
“I’m sorry, Daddy. I wet myself,” I said.
My dress was ruined. I loved this dress. It made me feel like a princess.
“Did you go into the bathroom?” Dad asked, his voice sounded scared, maybe he’d seen the bad man, but then I remembered all the times he said that it wasn’t real, and that I shouldn’t make up stories, so I didn’t say anything about the man. I didn’t want daddy to lock me in my room again.
“Mommy’s hurt and she was near the toilet I couldn’t go”
He held me tightly and, at the moment, I thought everything would be okay, but I was so wrong.

[Love to Hate Miranda]

“Stop.” Miranda waves a spatula and blocks our way. “No members of the wait staff allowed in the kitchen.”
“I need another order of vegan spring rolls. No meat!” Sarah yells.
“She stole my gluten-free bangus.” Susie pushes her way past Miranda, who bounces against the door to the cold room, opening it.
“Out, out of the kitchen.” Miranda sticks a finger in Susie’s chest. Big mistake.
Susie’s nostrils flare and her piercings dance. “Out of my way.”
With a hefty push, she shoves Miranda who stumbles back into the cold room. Her arms windmilling, she falls in between the sides of raw pork belly hanging up to dry.
“Ai ya!” Miranda slaps at the pork bellies and pulls on a trussed whole duck for balance, right when a wooden tray of balut, fertilized duck eggs with the intact embryo, falls and splatters over her. The slime and partially formed embryos ooze down her hair and face.
Everyone except Johnny bursts out laughing. I whip out my cell phone and snap as many pictures as I can before Johnny blocks my view to help his mother.
Out of nowhere, Carlos appears, and he gives Johnny a kick on the back of his tight leopard printed butt, sending him sprawling against the skewered suckling pigs. They tumble like dominoes, knocking Johnny on top of his balut-covered mother.

Carlos picks up a tray of the Vietnamese style transparently wrapped no-fry spring rolls and flings the contents into the cold room all over Johnny and Miranda. “Vegan spring rolls is off the menu.”
